API above 100? Health Ministry advises against outdoor events

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has advised against any outdoor events and activities when the Air Pollutants Index (API) reading exceeds 100.

He said t any such events should be postponed or cancelled until the air quality reached healthier levels.

“If the event must go on, it is advised that the occasion or activity be hosted indoors,” he said in a statement today.

He added that based on the ministry’s monitoring of haze-related diseases, namely upper respiratory tract infections, asthma and sore eyes, carried out over the past six weeks, preliminary findings did not indicate any upward trends in any such cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said the ministry advised the public to take proactive measures in limiting their exposure to unhealthy air quality and taking preventive steps from the effects of the haze.

“This includes limiting outdoor physical activities, always trying to be indoors and, if it is necessary for you to be outdoors, wearing proper masks.”

Furthermore, he said the public should ensure that the air inside houses and buildings was clean by reducing indoor contamination such as smoking, using air-conditioning, drinking at least eight cups of water a day and washing hands and faces with soap and clean water after outdoor activities.

The ministry also recommended that members of the public suffering from cough, sneezing, colds, asthma, eye pain and pneumonia seek immediate medical attention.

Earlier today, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2015 was cancelled and postponed to a later date when API readings escalated to unhealthy levels.
